Morgan’s
Breeder
I had planned for some time to breed Lucy, but
wanted
that special male …. looks, instinct and trainability … all of Lucy’s
qualities.
Joker had all those qualities and more. His owner had purchased
him
for a competition Obedience dog, but along the way, she became
interested
in fieldwork, and Joker took to it like a duck to water. He not
only
climbed to the Master Hunter level, but then further distinguished
himself
and his female handler in the highly-competitive world of field trials
by
earning the title Amateur Field Trial Champion (AFTC). In
my
opinion, the puppies resulting from the Lucy/Joker union should be
extraordinary
… time would validate that belief.
The pups arrived on my birthday, and it wasn’t long
until
I recognized they were all exceptional. Escaping from their puppy
pen
and terrorizing my kitchen provided numerous opportunities to observe
their
problem-solving skills. Everyone wanted that special pup ….
myself
included. It has been very gratifying to watch these pups grow
and
see the honors they have earned. Several are competing in field
events,
obedience events, and there is even one who does competitive dancing
and
has earned titles in that area. Dogs like my Sage (Syercroft’s
Lil
Dimon N’ the Ruff), Billy (Syercroft’s Huggy Bear), and Morgan
(Syercroft’s
Fire and Brimstone) just to name a few, are all great examples of this
very
successful breeding.
The following are
comments
from Leila M., his very proud owner/handler :
Morgan's birth
was
eagerly awaited in the hopes that this would be a dog who loved to
work....what
an understatement! The winning combination of Syercroft’s I Love
Lucy, CDX, WCI, JH and AFTC Wynwood’s Jokers Are Wild (USA), MH, CDX,
produced
an amazing boy. From the age of 7 weeks when I brought him home,
he demonstrated an unusually keen focus and interest in learning.
From Puppy Class for socialization and pre-obedience to fetching (and
bringing
back!) his frozen pigeon.... he couldn't get enough.
He was a normally playful puppy, but when it was
time
to train, he became this very serious student who crinkled his brow in
an earnest expression. Apparently, his sire, Joker, demonstrated
this same level of intense concentration as a youngster.
Morgan easily breezed through Obedience
competitions,
smiling and wagging his tail at all times, and achieved his Obedience
Trial Champion Title before three years of age. Because he
so enjoyed his ring experience, in 2006, we began our quest toward
OTCH-X
(Obedience Trial Champion-Excellent) where he must earn qualifying
scores
in both the Open and Utility Class in the same trial on 5 different
occasions.
He accomplished this twice by the end of 2006.
Morgan's keenest interest, however, is field work.
His
instincts, drive, intelligence and wisdom are indeed a pleasure to
watch
when he's working for a bird. When brought to the line, he is
already
surveying the field to pick out gunners' positions. He is solid
as
a rock at the line, and does not break. When set up for a blind,
he
will give an excited bark at the release command and run forward at
full
speed. At the sound of the whistle, he instantly whirls
around
to a sitting position awaiting his next command. If Morgan
was working for a more experienced handler, he would already have
achieved higher level titles in field ... however, we are learning
together,
and admittedly, I have slowed his progress.
This is a boy who loves to work, is socially
comfortable
and at ease with other dogs and situations, and in true Golden fashion,
loves all people. He is a strikingly powerful and confident
physical
specimen who can turn heads with his masculine good looks. But
above
all, he is a well-mannered member of our multiple-dog household, as
well
as my best friend .... his world is complete as long as we are
together.
He is truly a phenomenal dog, and it is my privilege to learn with him
at my side.
